Izzie Redpath was popular Drama and Movement teacher in Series 1 and Series 2 of Waterloo Road. She was the mother of Mika Grainger and Chlo Charles and the grandmother of Izzy and Tommy Charles. She was portrayed by Jill Halfpenny.

Personality & Backstory[]

Izzie Redpath was in her mid-late 30s, warm, with bags of charisma and a 'sod the rules' approach, who wings it too much for her own good. She's easy and open and can have a laugh at her own expense with the pupils. She's also a single mum with two teenage daughters of her own at the school - Mika and Chlo. At one point, before becoming a teacher, she was a singer and dancer.

Izzie was with their father, Jimmy Grainger, until he left them for "his 23-year-old bimbo".

Personal Storyline[]

Series 1[]

Izzie Redpath was waterloo roads drama teacher for the first 2 series. In the first ever episode, Izzie’s best friend and colleague, Lorna Dickey reveals to her that Tom, her fiancé, has just told her he no longer loves her. Lorna is distraught and Izzie tells her to go home and that she will confront Tom. She finds him in a pub later and after grilling him for a while figures out he has fallen for someone other than Lorna. Tom Clarkson tells his wife-to-be, Lorna Dickey, Izzie's best friend, that he cant marry her, as he has feelings for Izzie. She is angry but not as much as when he reveals he has fallen for her. She storms out and goes home, disregarding her children. She tells Lorna on the phone that Tom simply misses ‘the old Lorna’ and subsequently flicks through her diary. She realizes how much she thinks about Tom and that perhaps she does love him. She is still angry at him though and when he rings her she confirms they have no chance together. She is Best Woman at Tom’s and Lorna’s wedding and in her speech talks about her meeting with Lorna and how she values the couple as best friends. Having left her children in the company of her ex-husband, Jimmy Grainger she inquires as to how they are and finds that he has gone home to his girlfriend. This mixed with her newly discovered feelings for her best friend’s husband turn her hysterical and she sits outside of the wedding reception, smoking and waiting for a taxi. Tom finds her and consoles her to the point that they end up kissing passionately. She is shocked at herself and quickly leaves.

Series 2[]

At the end of series 1 Lorna tries, unsuccessfully, to commit suicide by jumping into a river as she discovers that tom and Izzie are together. Tom moves in with Izzie and the two of them are happy together, but when Izzie loses toms baby due to a fight with Lorna, things go wrong. Tom is, wrongly, accused of having relationships with student Stacey Appleyard and Izzie kicks him out. the two don't speak for weeks. This only ends when Lorna realises Izzie and Tom were meant to be and she tricks Tom and Izzie to come on holiday with her and they are re-united. On the same night, having sorted out her wrongs, Lorna commits suicide, leaving Izzie devastated. After finishing grieving for Lorna, Tom proposes to Izzie, and she agrees. The two of them would have lived happily ever after, but sadly not, Izzie sees Jed Seddon attacking the head master, Jack Rimmer, in the school car park at night, she runs to intervene, but Jed stabs her. Jed then runs off, leaving Jack bending over the body of his colleague. Jack didn't call the ambulance, but receives a award, leading to he and Tom, devastated by his wife's death, having a fight.
